This is the first recording by Shtreiml since 2014's Eastern Hora and the group's fifth album. Recorded in February of 2020, the album features original music largely inspired by the liturgical music of the Mizrahi (Eastern Jewish) tradition. Close your eyes and imagine that you are in the ancient city of Safed. It is Friday evening as the sun sets, peace falls upon the city and the chazzan (cantor) ushers in the holy sabbath with songs of praise.....

Tevet Sela and Jason Rosenblatt's Mizmor is a fiery and exotic collection of original music inspired by the ancient cantillations of old Morocco, the uplifting klezmer melodies of Eastern-Europe and the glorious modal improvisations of John Coltrane.

This collaborative project showcases the extreme versatility of alto saxophonist Tevet Sela, a creative force with a luscious tone who brings a rare wealth and breadth of influences to his playing. This adept and dexterous post-bopper’s music is often drenched in heavy blues and the Middle-Eastern inflections of his Israeli cultural heritage.

He is joined by composer and pianist Jason Rosenblatt. With a touch that blends 60s jazz with the insistence and drive of Jewish dance music, Rosenblatt’s penchant for the music of Eastern Europe rounds out this project and provides Mizmor with a complete spectrum of sounds from East to West.

Orkestra Severni (Northern Orkestra) burns through an unrelenting play list of the most heart-pounding, foot-stomping brass band music that Eastern Europe has to offer. And, it does so with both authenticity and vivacity. Orkestra Severni was founded in 2009 by trombonist Rachel Lemisch, scion of the Lemisch Klezmer dynasty of Iasi, Romanian, together with musicians who share an affinity for the high-energy brass band repertoire of the Klezmer, Moldavian and Serbian traditions. For several years now the group has been a fan favourite of such festivals as The Montreal International Jazz Festival, Toronto’s Ashkenaz Festival and the Montreal Jewish Music Festival; Always leaving audiences with great cheer and sore feet.

Orkestra Severni’s debut album, “Brass Fabulous” featuring eleven all original cuts, showcases the music of composer and pianist/harmonicist Jason Rosenblatt. With searing sirbas, freylachs galore and a sentimental waltz or two, this album is a must for any afficinoado of new Eastern European style music.

Replete with catchy hooks, massive horns, crunchy guitar and above all well crafted songs “Soldier Woman,” the debut album from Jump Babylon, weaves together country-rock tales of the immigrant experience, reggae paraphrasing of liturgical poetry and power anthems of biblical proportions. Jump Babylon was founded in 2011 by members of Shtreiml, Montreal’s veterans of the New Jewish Music scene and pioneers of bringing scorching klezmer to bars, festivals and concert halls across North America and Europe. “This project gives us an opportunity to get back to our rock and roll roots." says Jason Rosenblatt the band’s producer and composer whose gospel and New Orleans inspired piano and organ is peppered throughout the album. Indeed Jump Babylon performs an unrelenting set of in your face roots and rock. With songs that hearken to the heavier side of Neil Young, the gospel tinged music of Van Morrison, and even the ska numbers of The Cat Empire. Jump Babylon’s front man Adam Stotland propels the group with his powerful yet soulful vocals and searing guitar. “For a long time now we’ve been playing high-energy rock at clubs and weddings. We were playing Phish, Neil Young and Van Morrison juxtaposed with Chassidic music ” says Adam. “We felt it was time to begin a new project that reflected this aspect of our music, and so Jump Babylon was born.”
